The Nigeria Revenue Service has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening voluntary tax compliance, underscoring taxpayer education as a critical pillar for building a sustainable and efficient revenue system, one year after the implementation of Nigeria’s landmark tax reforms.
The commitment was reiterated in collaboration with the Chartered Institute of Taxation of Nigeria during the maiden edition of the 2026 National Tax Awareness Day, an initiative designed to assess progress since President Bola Ahmed Tinubu signed the country’s sweeping tax reform legislation into law in 2025.
According to a statement released on Sunday, the nationwide campaign featured a range of activities aimed at improving taxpayer education, encouraging voluntary compliance, and deepening public understanding of Nigeria’s evolving tax laws and regulatory requirements.
Held under the theme “Tax Awareness for National Growth: Reform, Compliance and Shared Prosperity,” the event was observed across CITN’s 49 District Societies spanning Nigeria’s 36 states, the Federal Capital Territory, as well as international districts in the United Kingdom and North America.
The awareness drive brought together tax professionals, government institutions, businesses, students, community organisations, and members of the public to promote a stronger culture of tax compliance and financial accountability.
The statement noted that the commemoration coincided with the first anniversary of the Tax Reform Acts, describing the reforms as a major step toward a more transparent, technology-driven, and service-oriented tax administration system.
As part of the campaign, CITN District Societies organised tax awareness roadshows, market sensitisation programmes, media engagements, stakeholder forums, tax clinics, school competitions, and grassroots outreach initiatives aimed at improving tax literacy and enhancing compliance management nationwide.
A key highlight of the event was a courtesy visit by CITN President and Chairman of Council, Innocent Ohagwa, alongside members of the institute’s Governing Council, to the headquarters of the Nigeria Revenue Service in Abuja.
The delegation was received by Mohammed Abubakar, Executive Director of Finance and Corporate Services, representing the Executive Chairman of the NRS, Dr. Zacch Adedeji.
The visit provided an opportunity for both institutions to review progress made since the implementation of the tax reforms while reaffirming their shared commitment to taxpayer education, voluntary compliance, and national development.
Speaking on behalf of Adedeji, Abubakar commended CITN for institutionalising National Tax Awareness Day and mobilising stakeholders across the country to advance tax education.
According to him, tax awareness remains the foundation of voluntary compliance, which is essential for developing a sustainable revenue framework capable of supporting long-term national growth.
He added that ongoing reforms are designed to build a tax administration system that is trusted, transparent, and powered by digital innovation, making compliance easier and more accessible for taxpayers.
The reforms, he noted, are increasingly supported by compliance automation, digital platforms, and regulatory technology solutions that improve regulatory reporting, operational efficiency, and taxpayer experience.
In his remarks, Ohagwa expressed appreciation to the NRS leadership for its continued collaboration in driving tax administration reforms.
He described National Tax Awareness Day as a coordinated nationwide effort aimed at strengthening tax education and supporting the successful implementation of Nigeria’s reform agenda.
Ohagwa also praised the NRS for introducing technology-driven initiatives such as Rev360, describing the platform as a significant advancement in modern tax administration that enhances transparency, efficiency, and taxpayer engagement.
The growing use of compliance software, compliance monitoring tools, and digital service platforms is expected to improve tax administration by simplifying filing processes, strengthening internal controls, and supporting more effective regulatory compliance monitoring.
The statement further noted that the National Tax Awareness Day reflects deepening collaboration between the NRS, CITN, and other key stakeholders in building a stronger tax culture across Nigeria.
Both institutions reaffirmed their commitment to sustained taxpayer engagement, improved service delivery, and voluntary compliance as key drivers of economic development.
In June 2025, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu signed four major tax reform bills into law, including the Nigeria Tax Act and related statutes, effectively modernising decades-old tax legislation.
The NRS has since set an ambitious revenue target of ₦40.7 trillion for 2026, driven by stronger non-oil revenue mobilisation, expanded compliance efforts, tighter enforcement, and increased automation.
The target represents a 44 percent increase from the ₦28.29 trillion collected in 2025 and reflects the Federal Government’s broader strategy to boost domestic revenue generation, reduce borrowing dependence, and strengthen fiscal sustainability through enhanced regulatory compliance and more effective tax administration.
