Google Wallet is making its debut in India, although the current Google Pay app will continue to serve as the primary platform for all payment-related activities in the country.
The new Wallet app will offer users access to a range of features, including boarding passes, loyalty cards, event tickets, public transport tickets, gift cards, and more. Notably, the launch partners for the Wallet app include over 20 prominent brands such as Air India, Dominos, and BMW.
However, Indian users will still need to utilize the separate Google Pay app for NFC and UPI payments, maintaining a distinction from other countries where Wallet replaced Pay in 2022. While Google initially offered both apps concurrently in the US, it phased out Pay earlier this year.
In addition to introducing the Wallet app, Google Pay recently struck a deal with India’s NPCI (National Payments Corporation of India) to expand the widely popular UPI (Unified Payments Interface) to other countries, indicating the platform’s global ambitions beyond India’s borders.
