Borderless.xyz has partnered with Mastercard to pilot a new framework designed to enhance trust, transparency, and compliance in cross-border stablecoin payments, as digital asset transactions continue to gain traction in global commerce.
The collaboration will explore how Mastercard Crypto Credential can support trusted interactions across stablecoin payment networks by providing standardised assurance signals that help participants verify counterparties and streamline compliance processes.
As stablecoins become increasingly popular for international payments due to their speed and efficiency, industry stakeholders are seeking stronger governance frameworks to ensure secure transactions while meeting regulatory and risk management requirements.
Under the pilot programme, Borderless.xyz and Mastercard will assess how Mastercard Crypto Credential can help payment providers determine whether counterparties meet established compliance standards, reducing operational friction in cross-border digital asset transactions.
Mastercard Crypto Credential is designed to promote trusted and verifiable interactions across blockchain ecosystems by using common standards and trusted verification mechanisms. The framework aims to improve confidence, transparency, and certainty in digital asset transactions while supporting broader adoption of blockchain-based payment solutions.
The initiative combines Mastercard’s expertise in building governance standards for digital assets with Borderless.xyz’s growing network of stablecoin payment providers to develop a more trusted infrastructure for international stablecoin transfers.
According to the companies, the collaboration seeks to reduce compliance bottlenecks by enabling participants to rely on standardised assurance signals rather than repeatedly conducting separate verification processes for every transaction partner.
Kevin Lehtiniitty, Chief Executive Officer and Co-Founder of Borderless.xyz, said compliance remains one of the biggest challenges limiting the scalability of stablecoin payment networks despite the efficiency of the payment technology itself.
He noted that traditional correspondent banking solved similar challenges by allowing institutions to rely on trusted compliance conducted upstream instead of repeating due diligence at every transaction point.
“One of the biggest friction points for stablecoin payment operators isn’t the payments. It’s that compliance doesn’t scale the same way the network does. Every new provider means starting the verification process over. Correspondent banking solved this decades ago by allowing originating compliance to be trusted downstream rather than re-executed at every counterparty. Mastercard is applying that model to digital asset payments, while Borderless.xyz provides the network through which it operates,” Lehtiniitty said.
Raj Dhamodharan, Executive Vice President, Blockchain & Digital Assets at Mastercard, described the pilot as another milestone in the companies’ growing relationship, which began through Mastercard’s Start Path startup engagement programme.
He said the collaboration reflects Mastercard’s continued efforts to support trusted digital asset ecosystems as blockchain-based financial services evolve.
“Innovation is most powerful when it builds over time. Our relationship with Borderless.xyz began through Start Path and has continued to grow as the digital asset ecosystem has matured. We are excited to take the next step together by exploring how Mastercard Crypto Credential can help bring greater trust and confidence to stablecoin payment flows across a growing network of participants,” Dhamodharan said.
The pilot also brings together several participants within Borderless.xyz’s payment network, including Infinia, Walapay, and Koywe, many of which are alumni of Mastercard’s Start Path programme.
These companies are expected to become among the first stablecoin payment providers to leverage Mastercard Crypto Credential under a single-audit compliance model designed to operate at network scale.
Advancing regulated digital asset payments
The partnership reflects growing industry efforts to improve governance and regulatory compliance in the digital asset ecosystem as stablecoins become increasingly important for cross-border payments, remittances, and global business transactions.
By introducing common compliance standards and trusted verification frameworks, Mastercard and Borderless.xyz aim to support safer, more efficient, and scalable stablecoin payment networks while encouraging broader institutional adoption of blockchain-based financial services.
