The Philippine digital identity authority, PhilSys, has launched an advanced authentication service, PhilSys Check, to bolster the security of transactions using biometrics and digital IDs. As part of this initiative, the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) is conducting registration drives in Geographically Isolated and Disadvantaged Areas (GIDAs), employing mobile services for increased accessibility.

PhilSys Check employs a digital signature embedded in the QR code located on the back of both the PhilID card and the ePhilID. This service operates through a dedicated website accessible via computer or mobile device browsers.

In addition, Civil Registry System facilities in the National Capital Region of the Philippines have implemented fingerprint biometric authentication. This measure ensures the verification of the identity of PhilID and ePhilID holders when they request civil registry documents.

PSA Undersecretary Claire Dennis S. Mapa, PhD, who also serves as the national statistician and civil registrar general, emphasized that the expanded implementation of these authentication services aligns with PhilSys’ objectives. These objectives include seamless and targeted service delivery, prevention of fraudulent transactions, fortifying financial inclusion, and facilitating ease of doing business.

While the PSA is actively developing further authentication services, it underscores that the PhilSys Number and registered biometrics form the foundation for establishing identity within the system.

A public service announcement by the PSA reports that the country has achieved over 50.3 million PhilIDs registered by the end of 2023, with more than 45.6 million already delivered. The issued ePhilIDs have surpassed 44.5 million.

The announcement also shares personal stories illustrating the positive impact of the national digital ID, emphasizing that the registration process involves enrolling fingerprint, iris, and face biometrics—conforming to ICAO standards.

As of January 5, 2024, more than 83 million Filipinos have registered for PhilSys.
