Turkey’s competition authority has issued an interim measure against Meta Platforms Inc., aiming to restrict data sharing between Instagram and Threads platforms amid ongoing investigations into potential abuse of Meta’s dominant market position.

In December, the authority initiated an inquiry into Meta Platforms Inc. (META.O) over alleged breaches of competition law concerning the integration of its social media platforms Instagram and the newer Threads.

The interim measure will remain in effect until a final ruling is reached, as the merging of data obtained through these applications could potentially contravene competition regulations and inflict irreversible harm on the market.

In a separate investigation, the Turkish authority has imposed a daily fine of 4.8 million lira ($148,000) on Meta Platforms Inc. This penalty stems from concerns surrounding a notification message sent to users regarding data sharing practices across Meta’s Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp services.

The authority criticized the notification for lacking sufficient transparency and failing to adequately inform users about data sharing practices. Furthermore, it found that the notification appeared to guide users towards granting consent for data sharing, which was deemed insufficient in addressing anti-competitive apprehensions.

At the time of reporting, a spokesperson for Meta Platforms Inc. has not issued a statement regarding these regulatory actions.
