In a comprehensive report titled “The State of E-Wallets: Africa and the Middle East,” the landscape of e-wallet adoption in these regions is meticulously examined, shedding light on key players and analyzing their offerings.

At the forefront of this burgeoning market are the vast populations of unbanked individuals, coupled with the pervasive use of mobile phones, driving the rapid uptake of e-wallet solutions. These digital wallets offer unparalleled convenience and accessibility, catering to the diverse financial needs of users.

The report underscores twelve prominent e-wallet platforms operating in Africa and the Middle East, all of which are staged e-wallets capable of holding value directly and facilitating seamless transactions. Notably, the majority of these platforms are spearheaded by telecommunications providers, highlighting the dominance of telcos in the digital finance landscape.

These telco-backed platforms play a pivotal role in fostering financial inclusion by extending their services to unbanked and remote populations across multiple countries where they have a presence.

Among the twelve highlighted e-wallets, four have garnered multi-country coverage, emerging as regional leaders, while the remaining eight operate on a national scale.

Leading the charge are renowned platforms such as Airtel Money, M-Pesa, MTN Mobile Money, and Orange Money, all pioneered by telecommunications giants. These platforms offer a myriad of financial services, including fund transfers, bill payments, and international remittances, catering to the diverse needs of users in the region.

MTN Mobile Money stands out as a key player with a substantial user base exceeding 50 million and processing over 900 million transactions monthly since its inception in 2009 in Ghana.

Similarly, M-Pesa and Airtel Money, originating from Kenya, have left an indelible mark on the digital finance landscape. M-Pesa, a trailblazing mobile money transfer service and micro-financing solution, has revolutionized financial transactions in the region.

Meanwhile, Airtel Money, offered by Airtel Africa, boasts a robust suite of mobile money services, including payments, micro-loans, savings, and international money transfers.
