Chipper Cash, a leading financial technology company catering to over five million customers across Africa, has announced a strategic decision to streamline its workforce, leading to the elimination of roles based in the UK and the US. This move comes on the heels of the company’s recent suspension of operations in the United States, as outlined in a company blog post.

In alignment with its renewed focus on African business regions, Chipper Cash has opted to reallocate resources, resulting in the restructuring of its workforce. Approximately twenty employees are expected to be affected by these changes, with reports indicating that even executives have not been immune to the workforce adjustments.

CEO Ham Serunjogi underscored the company’s unwavering commitment to its core markets in Africa, where it has established a strong presence and offers a diverse range of consumer products. Despite the suspension of operations in the United States, Serunjogi affirmed Chipper Cash’s intention to resume services there in the foreseeable future.

The decision to downsize in the UK and US follows earlier workforce reductions implemented by Chipper Cash in December 2023, which saw the layoff of 15 individuals and a 25% reduction in salaries for employees in those regions. Despite these measures, the company maintained resilience and continued to thrive in its core markets.

Addressing the impact of the US operations’ suspension, Serunjogi assured customers that the disruption was minimal, particularly emphasizing that the United States was not a primary focus for Chipper Cash. He clarified that the services offered in the US were an extension of the company’s core offerings in Africa.

As Chipper Cash navigates these strategic adjustments, its unwavering dedication to African markets remains steadfast, reflecting its commitment to driving financial inclusion and innovation across the continent.
