In a major crackdown on organized cyberfraud, INTERPOL has taken significant action, blocking 208 bank accounts and apprehending 103 individuals involved in West African financial crime networks.

The global law enforcement organization revealed that this operation, codenamed “Operation Jackal,” resulted in the freezing of over 200 bank accounts linked to the proceeds of online financial crimes. The operation, conducted between May 15 and 29, saw collaboration among police forces, financial crime units, and cybercrime agencies from 21 countries worldwide. The primary focus was on dismantling Black Axe and other similar West African organized crime groups.

The operation yielded impressive outcomes, with Interpol reporting, “€2.15 million seized or frozen, 103 arrests, 1,110 suspects identified, and 208 bank accounts blocked.”

Isaac Oginni, the Director of Interpol’s Financial Crime and Anti-Corruption Centre, highlighted the importance of the operation. He stated, “Organized crime is largely motivated by financial gain, and Interpol is dedicated to collaborating with member countries to strip these groups of their unlawfully acquired assets.”

Oginni emphasized the success of the operation as a testament to international cooperation’s potential and its effectiveness in dealing with financial crimes. He added, “This successful operation involving so many countries clearly shows what can be achieved through international cooperation and will serve as a model for coordinated law enforcement efforts against financial crime in the future.”
