Ecobank Ghana appoints Mrs Abena Osei-Poku as Managing Director

Ecobank Ghana has announced the appointment of Mrs. Abena Osei-Poku as its new Managing Director and Regional Executive for the Anglophone West Africa (AWA) Region of the Ecobank Group, effective January 1, 2024. This appointment follows the retirement of the former Managing Director, Mr. Dan Sackey, and the interim role held by Ms. Joana Mensah, the Acting Managing Director from August 15, 2023.

Mrs. Abena Osei-Poku brings over 25 years of extensive experience in the financial services industry, demonstrating her proficiency in Corporate and Investment banking, Business banking, and Risk Management at the regional level.

Commencing her career as a private banker with First Atlantic Merchant Bank, she then joined Standard Chartered Bank Ghana, where she served in various capacities, including Assistant Relationship Manager, Credit Manager for Multinational Corporates, and Director for Global Corporates, Wholesale Bank.

Having spent a decade at Standard Chartered Bank Ghana, she assumed the role of Executive Director for Commercial Banking at Barclays Bank Ghana. Subsequently, Mrs. Abena Osei-Poku joined Absa Bank Group (formerly Barclays Bank), where she served as Co-Regional Head of Coverage, Corporate & Investment Banking, overseeing East and West Africa. Later, she became the CEO and Managing Director of Absa Bank Ghana.

Mrs. Abena Osei-Poku’s board-level expertise extends across telecommunications, banking, commerce, and hospitality. Currently, she chairs the Advisory Board of the College of Health Sciences at the University of Ghana and serves as the outgoing Chairperson for the Council of the Ghana Stock Exchange.

With an MBA from Manchester Business School, UK, and a Bachelor of Arts in Economics and Statistics from the University of Ghana, Mrs. Abena Osei-Poku’s wealth of knowledge and leadership will contribute significantly to her new role at Ecobank.
