Airtel Africa has announced a strategic partnership with SpaceX to roll out Starlink’s high-speed satellite internet services across the continent, marking a pivotal moment in Africa’s digital infrastructure development.
In an official statement on Monday, Airtel Africa revealed that SpaceX has already secured the necessary regulatory approvals in nine of the 14 countries where Airtel operates. Efforts to obtain operating licenses in the remaining five countries are currently underway.
The partnership is set to significantly bolster Airtel Africa’s next-generation satellite connectivity portfolio, aiming to provide enhanced broadband solutions to businesses, government institutions, and socio-economic hubs such as schools and healthcare centers, particularly in underserved and rural regions.
“Through this collaboration, we aim to strengthen rural coverage by leveraging cellular backhaul and expanding our satellite broadband reach,” the company stated. Both firms will also explore synergies around leveraging Airtel Africa’s ground infrastructure to boost Starlink’s regional presence and promote broader digital inclusion across the continent.
Sunil Taldar, Managing Director of Airtel Africa, emphasized the company’s enduring commitment to driving digital empowerment in Africa. “Our partnership with SpaceX is a transformative milestone that aligns with our mission to enrich lives through digital innovation and enable greater access to reliable, affordable connectivity in remote and under-connected areas,” Taldar said.
Chad Gibbs, Vice President of Starlink Business Operations, expressed enthusiasm about the collaboration, stating, “We’re thrilled to partner with Airtel to introduce the transformational potential of Starlink across Africa in new and impactful ways. With Starlink already active in over 20 African markets, this alliance reflects our dedication to scaling digital access through collaboration with key telecom leaders.”
Gibbs also highlighted Airtel’s instrumental role in shaping Africa’s telecom evolution, positioning the company as a natural partner in extending Starlink’s direct-to-consumer and enterprise services throughout the region.
This partnership underscores the growing integration of regulatory technology solutions and satellite-driven connectivity to close Africa’s digital divide. It sets the stage for enhanced compliance infrastructure, streamlined service delivery, and stronger support for data privacy, KYC processes, and financial inclusion through robust digital networks.
