Airtel Africa revealed on Tuesday the forthcoming appointment of Sunil Taldar as the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, signaling the retirement of the long-serving CEO, Olusegun Ogunsanya.

Olusegun Ogunsanya, who has dedicated 12 years to the company, will officially retire on July 1, 2024. Having previously overseen Airtel’s Nigeria Operations for nine years, he assumed the role of CEO for Airtel Africa group in 2021. During his tenure, the company expanded its footprint to serve 14 national markets, primarily in East and Central Africa. As of September 2023, Airtel Africa boasts a substantial user base of 147.7 million, establishing itself as the second-largest mobile network operator on the continent.

Airtel Africa commended Ogunsanya for his local expertise and deep distribution experience, which played a pivotal role in maintaining consistent double-digit revenue growth and introducing innovative products across the continent. Following his retirement, Ogunsanya will offer advisory support to the Chairman, the Airtel Africa Board, and the Chief Executive Officer for a period of 12 months. Additionally, he will take on the role of the inaugural Chair of the Airtel Africa Charitable Foundation. The foundation will operate independently, focusing on initiatives such as digital inclusion, financial inclusion, access to education, and environmental protection.

Sunil Taldar, who joined Airtel Africa in October 2023 as the Director of Transformation, will commence the transition to the CEO role, working closely with Ogunsanya. Taldar will be appointed as an Executive Director on the Board and officially assume the position of CEO in July.

Sunil Bharti Mittal, Chairman of Airtel Africa plc, expressed gratitude to Segun Ogansanya for his significant contributions to the company, emphasizing a smooth transition period under his continued leadership. With the confidence that Sunil Taldar is already part of the group, Mittal anticipates an orderly handover of responsibilities.
