Airtel Rwanda the fast-growing service provider of Voice, Data, and Mobile Financial services has deliberately eliminated all costs for its popular peer-to-peer money transfer.
Peer-to-peer lending popularly known as P2P is a popular mode of payment in Rwanda and the larger sub-Saharan region. The Airtel Money Tariff was announced by Amit Chawla, Airtel’s Managing Director, who pointed out that the company is cognizant of the adverse impact of Covid-19 on its customers.
According to Airtel, customers can freely move $2,005 (Rwf2,000,000) per transaction for three transactions at no cost within a day. This should translate to savings on transfer fees which in the long run shall accumulate and be put into better use. Airtel Money also reduced withdrawal fees at Airtel agents by 20%.
This comes on the back of a dedicated rollout to Airtel Money shops that complement the existing network of Airtel’s service centers.
The move by Airtel has probably been inspired by regional competitor Safaricom’s Mpesa platform that introduced a zero transaction fee in March when the Covid-19 pandemic was declared a global pandemic. Kenyan subscribers could send any amount less than $10 (Ksh 1000) at no charge for a given duration period.
