The arrival of 5G has been announced in Tunisia since 2020. Investments in networks have been made to accommodate this new technology, which will potentially bring growth to trade and services based on broadband Internet models.

The commercial launch of fifth-generation (5G) mobile technology in Tunisia is scheduled for 2024. The roadmap for its implementation is being developed and will be announced in the coming weeks. This was revealed by Nizar Ben Neji, the Tunisian Minister of Communication Technology, on Monday, (May 8, 2023) on the occasion of the ICT Summit 2023 organized by Huawei Tunisia.

« Pilot experiments have been carried out in this direction with telecommunications operators. The deployment of this technology in Tunisia will be done gradually and will be declined according to the needs of different types of users including companies and administrations, “said Nizar Ben Neji.

Over the past three years, telecommunications operators have invested heavily in modernizing their networks to prepare for the deployment of ultra-broadband. Tunisie Telecom confirmed in November 2022 its ability to offer 5G after a consumer test conducted on the sidelines of the 18th International Summit of La Francophonie. Ooredoo Tunisia and Orange Tunisia have also carried out satisfactory tests, favorable to the commercialization of 5G.

The deployment of 5G in Tunisia is an essential part of the digitalization strategy of the national economy to foster the growth of digital inclusion. According to Nizar Ben Neji, 5G will guarantee a very significant increase in throughput, ultra-fast connectivity, reduced latency and increased capacity, thus opening the way to new possibilities and applications especially those related to the Internet of Things and connected objects in general.

According to the GSMA’s “5G in Africa: Realising the potential” report, 5G mobile networks are expected to account for an economic contribution of $26 billion across their entire value chain to Africa by 2030.
