South Sudan launches first locally-owned mobile network

South Sudan has launched Digitel Network, the country’s first-ever mobile network operator owned by local investors.

The the historic launch was presided by President Salva Kiir Mayardit in the capital Juba.

Digitel Network becomes the third mobile network operator in South Sudan after MTN and Zain and looking to fast-track connectivity in areas previously not served by other operators.

President Mayardit said his government is committed to bringing mobile services to remote areas and also noting that South Sudan needs to catch up with the rest of the world in terms of digital technology.

“The installation of mobile service infrastructure is an ongoing process. Recently people in Maper, Rumbek North County and Pochalla in the Greater Pibor Administrative Area have been connected to a mobile network, said President Mayardit.

“I have been informed that in three weeks’ time, Boma in the Greater Pibor Administrative area and Kuron Peace Village in Kapoeta East County will also be connected to the mobile network,”

He further stated that the launch of the new operator is the result of the government’s partnership with the private sector, and that the government will explore options – including tax exemptions – that will benefit the importation of network equipment and other telecommunications tools.
