Digital financial services provider OPay has unveiled the technology infrastructure underpinning its payment platform, highlighting significant investments in engineering, cybersecurity, and digital infrastructure that have enabled it to deliver fast, secure, and reliable financial services to millions of users across Nigeria.
The company shared details of its technology strategy during a media parley held on July 16, 2026, where executives engaged media stakeholders on the innovations supporting one of Nigeria’s largest digital payments platforms and outlined the company’s long-term growth ambitions.
Building an Inclusive Digital Financial Ecosystem
Speaking at the event, OPay’s Chief Commercial Officer, Elizabeth Wang, said the company’s vision extends beyond offering a digital payments application to building a technology-driven financial ecosystem that promotes inclusion and creates long-term social value.
According to Wang, OPay aims to serve one billion users, support 10 million merchants, and facilitate the creation of one million jobs through continued investment in digital financial services.
She noted that every successful transaction on the platform is supported by years of investment in technology, infrastructure, and innovation.
“People may only see a successful transfer or payment notification, but behind that moment are years of investment in technology, infrastructure and innovation. Our goal is to make digital finance so dependable that customers can move money confidently without ever needing to think about the technology making it possible,” she said.
Customer-Centred Engineering
Chief Operating Officer and Chief Technology Officer, Dotun Adekunle, explained that OPay’s engineering philosophy is driven by solving customer problems rather than simply deploying new technologies.
According to him, issues such as failed transfers, delayed transaction alerts, and security concerns are treated as engineering priorities, with development efforts focused on eliminating friction from the customer experience.
“We don’t begin with technology. We begin with the customer’s experience. Every failed transfer, delayed alert or security concern is treated as an engineering challenge. Where others accept these problems as normal, our teams work until the problem disappears from the customer’s experience,” Adekunle said.
Infrastructure Designed for Reliability
Adekunle disclosed that OPay has built multiple layers of redundancy into its payment infrastructure, including backup systems, direct connections to payment switching partners, and automated failover mechanisms that reroute transactions whenever service disruptions occur.
He said these investments have enabled the platform to achieve a 99.9 per cent transaction success rate, while improvements to transaction processing architecture have reduced average processing time to less than one second.
According to him, the company has also enhanced its payment infrastructure through dedicated network connections and optimised processing pipelines, reducing dependence on congested shared networks.
“Our job is to make technology almost invisible. Customers should never have to think about servers, networks or system architecture. They should know that when they press ‘Send’, their money gets there quickly, securely and reliably,” he added.
AI-Driven Security and Fraud Prevention
On cybersecurity, Adekunle said OPay has implemented intelligent, risk-based security measures that introduce additional authentication only when unusual activity is detected.
He explained that facial verification is automatically triggered for high-risk transactions, including transfers from unfamiliar locations, unusually large transactions, or suspicious late-night account activity, while routine transactions continue without unnecessary interruptions.
The company also highlighted its in-house Security Centre, which incorporates features such as Emergency Lock, Safety PIN, Night Guard, Large Transaction Shield, and an Artificial Intelligence-powered Anti-Scam Shielddesigned to strengthen fraud prevention and customer protection.
“The best security is the one customers rarely notice because it appears only when risk changes. We designed our platform to protect customers without interrupting the speed and convenience they expect every day,” Adekunle said.
Supporting Nigeria’s Digital Economy
OPay further disclosed that its technology infrastructure operates continuously through thousands of application programming interfaces (APIs), redundant transaction pathways, local processing capabilities, and round-the-clock monitoring systems.
The company noted that hundreds of engineers oversee server performance, transaction processing, and application interfaces, while artificial intelligence supports fraud detection, risk management, and operational efficiency. Software updates are also deployed without disrupting customer services.
Beyond payments, Wang reaffirmed OPay’s commitment to advancing financial inclusion, education, and youth development through technology-driven initiatives.
She highlighted the company’s expanded ₦1.2 billion, 10-year OPay Scholars Programme, which now incorporates a National Innovation Challenge aimed at equipping young Nigerians with skills for opportunities within the country’s growing digital economy.
According to Wang, the company believes technology should deliver value beyond commercial success by expanding access to financial services, strengthening trust in digital finance, and creating broader economic opportunities.
“We believe the true value of technology is measured not only by business success but by the positive impact it creates for society. Every innovation should make financial services more inclusive, strengthen trust and create opportunities for more people to participate in Nigeria’s digital economy,” she said.
