The Nigeria Data Protection Act of 2023 has been enacted, setting a robust legal framework for safeguarding personal information and steering data protection practices in Nigeria.

Dr. Vincent Olatunji, the National Commissioner of the Nigeria Data Protection Bureau (NDPB), highlighted this development during the NDPD Strategic Roadmap and Action Plan (SRAP) validation workshop held in Abuja, according to reports from NAN.

This bill, after undergoing due processes, was presented to the Senate and House of Representatives for thorough evaluation and approval. The initiative came to fruition on April 4, 2023, following a formal submission by former President Muhammadu Buhari.

Now transformed into law, the legislation establishes the Nigeria Data Protection Commission, superseding the NDPB which was originally established in February 2022 by President Buhari. This new commission will be led by a National Commissioner tasked with the vital responsibility of overseeing the regulation of personal information processing activities.
