Amazon has inaugurated a new development center in Nairobi, Kenya, with the aim of catalyzing the country’s information and communications technology (ICT) sector. This center will also serve as a hub for the broader East African region.

The American tech giant’s latest endeavor is set to provide employment opportunities for Kenyan youth, offering roles in telecommunications, software development, and software engineering, each requiring a high level of skill and expertise.

Kenyan President William Ruto welcomed Amazon’s decision to establish this development center in Kenya, emphasizing the trust that Amazon Web Services (AWS) has shown in Kenya’s workforce and economy. He expressed optimism about the ongoing partnership between Kenya and AWS, highlighting the tech sector’s pivotal role in generating economic growth and job opportunities, particularly during times of global uncertainty.

Uwem Ukpong, Vice President at AWS, underlined the potential for the new center to drive technological advancements within Kenya, leveraging the abundant technical talent available in the country. He also emphasized the collaborative aspect of the initiative, stating that it, along with AWS partners, aims to create advanced technology jobs in one of Africa’s prominent tech hubs.

This center’s launch coincides with President Ruto’s recent visit to the United States, during which he extended invitations to American technology companies to establish operations and regional offices in Kenya. He emphasized the favorable business environment in Kenya, characterized by economic stability, entrepreneurship, security, innovation, and tax incentives. President Ruto underscored the government’s commitment to implementing ambitious reforms aimed at positioning Kenya as a leading regional business hub.
