Ubank, the digital arm of National Australia Bank (NAB), has made history as Australia’s first financial institution to offer password-free authentication across both its mobile app and online banking platforms.
The move expands Ubank’s Passkey technology—first introduced in its mobile app in August 2024—to the web, allowing customers to log in securely using biometric or device-based authentication instead of traditional passwords or SMS verification codes.
Since the launch, adoption has been rapid, with 90% of active app users already switching to Passkeys as their preferred login method. This shift marks a major step forward in the bank’s commitment to improving both security and customer experience.
With the new update, customers who have registered a Passkey in the Ubank app can now use the same credential to access their online accounts seamlessly.
“Passkeys offer a safe and simple login experience,” said Andrew Morrison, Chief Customer and Digital Officer at Ubank. “By expanding this technology to online banking, we’re giving customers more choice and convenience while strengthening protection against phishing and impersonation scams.”
Passkeys, developed through the FIDO Alliance and backed by major tech companies including Apple, Google, and Microsoft, are emerging as a next-generation security standard designed to eliminate password vulnerabilities.
Ubank’s full-scale rollout of Passkeys underscores its digital-first strategy and positions it as a leader in secure, user-friendly banking innovation in Australia’s financial sector.
