Google CEO Sundar Pichai has expressed strong enthusiasm for the tech giant’s growing collaboration with OpenAI, describing the recent cloud computing partnership as an exciting step forward for Google Cloud’s open platform strategy.
“We’re very excited to be partnering with OpenAI on Google Cloud,” Pichai stated during Alphabet’s Q2 2025 earnings call. “Google Cloud has a longstanding commitment to supporting innovative companies, AI labs, and startups. This partnership underscores our continued investment in building robust relationships in the AI space.”
The announcement comes amid intensifying questions from analysts about Google’s evolving AI roadmap and the company’s substantial $10 billion increase in capital expenditures this year. As the race to lead generative AI innovation accelerates, Google is strategically positioning its cloud business to serve high-demand clients like OpenAI, despite the competitive tension the relationship introduces.
OpenAI, widely viewed as Google Search’s most formidable rival, has quietly added Google Cloud to its list of infrastructure providers—alongside Microsoft and Oracle—to access additional computing power, including access to Google’s robust supply of Nvidia GPUs and proprietary TPU chips.
The deal signals a significant win for Google Cloud, which saw revenue jump to $13.6 billion in Q2 2025—up from $10.3 billion in the same period last year. Much of that growth is attributed to increasing demand from AI labs and enterprises leveraging Google’s cloud infrastructure to develop and deploy large-scale models.
Major AI players such as Anthropic, Safe Superintelligence (founded by Ilya Sutskever), and World Labs (led by Fei-Fei Li) have also chosen Google Cloud as a key partner, reflecting confidence in the platform’s computational strength and AI-specific tooling.
Despite OpenAI’s status as a direct threat to Google’s core search business—particularly through the rapid adoption of ChatGPT—Pichai emphasized the strategic importance of maintaining an open, collaborative ecosystem. The dynamics of this partnership reflect a complex balancing act: Google supports the advancement of AI, even as it competes for dominance in the very same field.
Meanwhile, Google’s own AI offerings are gaining traction. The company reported that Gemini, its flagship chatbot, now serves 450 million monthly active users, while its AI Overviews feature is accessed over 2 billion times each month. Yet, questions persist about the commercial impact of these tools and how they affect traditional search engagement.
While some industry observers view the OpenAI deal as potentially risky—drawing parallels with Google’s early partnership with Yahoo, which inadvertently accelerated its rise—the long-term implications of this collaboration are yet to unfold.
