Banco Santander has achieved a significant milestone by migrating its corporate and investment banking business, Santander CIB, to Gravity, its cloud-native core banking platform introduced in May 2022.

Utilizing the Gravity platform, the business unit seamlessly transitioned to Google Cloud, where it oversees approximately one million accounting operations and half a million treasury operations daily. The bank proudly asserts that the migration was executed smoothly, encompassing all commercial customers in the UK and the consumer business in Chile without any service interruptions.

Santander aims to finalize the full migration by the end of the coming year, with the ongoing transition of its Brazilian operations already deemed “well advanced.” Once this phase concludes, the Gravity platform is expected to manage over one trillion technical executions annually.

The overarching transformation is anticipated to yield enhanced data efficiency and product agility, leveraging real-time analytics for informed decision-making.

Gravity stands out with its unique capability for parallel processing, facilitating the simultaneous operation of workloads on both a mainframe and the cloud. This feature proves crucial for migrating services between the two environments with minimal service disruption.

Dirk Marzluf, Chief Operating and Technology Officer at Banco Santander, characterizes the migration of Santander CIB to the cloud as “a new milestone” aligned with the group’s pursuit of “a simpler, more integrated model, contributing to enhanced profitability.”

The platform’s parallel processing capabilities have also been extended to external entities through the bank’s partnership with Google Cloud. This collaboration resulted in the creation of the Dual Run service in October 2022, empowering companies to smoothly transition from legacy mainframe systems to the cloud, mirroring the successful journey of Santander CIB.
