Unitel, Angola’s mobile operator, launched its mobile money service Unitel Money, which will allow subscribers to easily make financial transactions using their mobile phones.

According to a statement, Unitel intends to reach over 3 million users in the mobile money business and the company says it will only be profitable as the number of customers increases.

“Before that we don’t have great profit prospects,” said Miguel Geraldes, General Director of Unitel.

The telco says it aims to promote the development of science, technology and innovation, human development and also improve the quality of life of populations.

Though Unitel money is not the first mobile payments service in Angola, Geraldes emphasized 3 factors that give the operator an advantage, one of them being the agents network.

“UNITEL has over 6,000 contracted Agents and around 20,000 sub-Agents. We will start with more than 1000 Agents nationwide, with ongoing contracts”, he said.

The digital wallet that allows subscribers to deposit, store, transfer, buy Unitel recharges or withdraw funds via a mobile phone in a practical, easy and secure way.

Deposits and withdrawals from the Unitel Money wallet can be made at any Unitel Money Store or Agent, in a network of hundreds of branches throughout the country, says the telco.

There are no costs to open a Unitel Money account and everything is conducted digitally. Customers can access the platform menu via *449# or by downloading the Unitel Money app from the Playstore or App store.

Unitel Money service is supported by Huawei Technologies as a strategic partner.
