The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has announced the closure of all data modification services at its National Identification Number (NIN) enrollment centres across the country. Moving forward, all NIN holders wishing to update their personal information will be required to use the NIMC self-service modification portal.
In a notice released yesterday via its official X (formerly Twitter) account, NIMC explained that this decision is part of its ongoing efforts to improve the National Identity Management System (NIMS) by streamlining processes and enhancing user experience.
“Modification activities will no longer be conducted at our enrollment centres. Instead, we have launched a convenient self-service modification portal, allowing you to securely and efficiently update your information online,” the statement read.
The Commission emphasized that the self-service portal offers several benefits, including the ability to make updates at any time and from any location, eliminating the need for long queues and reducing wait times. The portal also enhances data security through a more secure online platform, while offering faster approvals and more efficient processes.
Although the self-service modification portal has been in place for some time, users were previously still able to modify their data at physical centres, often facing long delays. The transition to a fully digital process is intended to address these inefficiencies.
However, users have reported mixed experiences with the portal, with some facing challenges. The most common issues include difficulties receiving the one-time password (OTP) required to proceed with modifications and the rejection of modification requests, particularly for those seeking changes to sensitive information like date of birth.
To use the NIMC modification portal, users must visit the site at https://selfservicemodification.nimc.gov.ng. The process starts by verifying the NIN and logging into the portal. From there, users should navigate to the dashboard and select the “NIN Modification” option to make the necessary changes.
For those modifying their date of birth, they will need to provide their National Population Commission (NPC) certificate number for validation. The date of birth will then auto-fill and cannot be manually changed. In cases where users do not have an NPC certificate, they can perform an online birth attestation via the National Population Commission website.
Users are also required to make payments through Paystack and upload necessary supporting documents, including the NPC certificate, before reviewing and submitting their modification request. A modification transaction slip is generated instantly, and once the request is approved, users will receive an updated NIN slip via email. The updated slip can also be printed directly from the dashboard.
While NIMC is optimistic about the new system’s convenience and security, it remains to be seen how effectively the portal will address the complaints previously raised by users.
