Nigeria: NCC Refutes Claims of Telecom Tariff Increases

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has refuted recent online reports suggesting that it has approved new tariffs for mobile network operators. Various blogs and news outlets had circulated headlines such as “Nigerians to Pay More for Calls as NCC Approves New Tariff Plans for Telcos” and “NCC Reportedly Okays Tariff Hikes for Telcos.”

In response, the NCC clarified through its verified X handle that, “The NCC has neither approved any new Telecom Tariff Plans nor authorized any tariff hikes as reported online. We advise the public to disregard these false claims.”

The commission emphasized that it has only directed operators to simplify their existing tariff plans to ensure transparency and fairness for consumers.

Despite the misinformation, it is worth noting that telecommunications companies in Nigeria have been advocating for a review of tariffs for voice, SMS, and data services. They argue that such adjustments are necessary to address the current economic challenges facing the sector.

The last adjustment to telecom tariffs occurred 11 years ago, in 2013.
