South Africa: Future DX Team Clinches MTN Business App of the Year with Innovative Learning Platform

In a triumphant victory, the Future DX team from Mafikeng, North West, secured the top spot in the Hackathon category of the 2023 MTN App of the Year awards, showcasing exceptional skills and problem-solving prowess.

Their winning creation, Thutofy, is an online learning platform equipped with integrated AI, addressing the digital skills gap in Africa. Specifically targeting unemployed graduates, youth, and professionals, Thutofy offers digital skills courses, a portfolio of evidence for CVs, job recommendations, and gamification with incentives to foster learning and combat unemployment.

The Hackathon category was sponsored by the Energy and Water Sector Education and Training Authority (EWSETA), a driving force in developing solutions for the future sustainability of South Africa. EWSETA gains access to locally developed innovative solutions that advance skills development in energy and water preservation, usage, and management, along with addressing other social challenges.

Candice Moodley, Corporate Services Executive for EWSETA, congratulated Thato Semenya and Letlhogonolo Korasi from Future DX, acknowledging their dedication, technical expertise, and profound understanding of social issues that led to the development of this groundbreaking solution. Moodley expressed excitement about the duo’s continued success and contributions to the tech community.

The MTN Business Hackathon, which took place in October, attracted numerous local app developers aiming to design solutions for South Africa’s unique social challenges. The Hackathon category at the MTN Business App of the Year Awards showcased the cream of the recent MTN Business Hackathon crop, competing for this prestigious title.

This annual platform, including the 6-week MTN Business App Academy, Hackathon, and App of the Year Awards, plays a crucial role in empowering local entrepreneurs, highlighting innovative solutions within South Africa’s ICT industry. By nurturing future entrepreneurs in the digital space, these initiatives contribute not only to addressing youth unemployment but also to fostering an economy capable of providing real-world solutions.
