The Federal Ministry of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy (FMoCIDE) has unveiled an ambitious plan to equip three million early- to mid-career technical talents with essential tech skills over the next four years. This strategic initiative aims to foster the growth of Nigeria’s workforce and transform the nation’s technological landscape.
The comprehensive training program will encompass a wide range of tech-related skills, including both tech-enabled and tech-adjacent competencies, core technological proficiencies, and advanced expertise. FMoCIDE envisions this endeavor as a significant step towards bolstering Nigeria’s technological capabilities.
Out of the three million individuals set to benefit from this initiative, 1.5 million will remain in Nigeria, contributing to the local tech ecosystem. The remaining participants are expected to excel on a global scale, with a preference for remote work opportunities.
This mission falls under the knowledge pillar of FMoCIDE’s strategic plan, which includes other vital objectives. One such goal is to achieve a remarkable 95% digital literacy rate in Nigeria by the year 2030, positioning the nation in the top 25% percentile for global research.
The second pillar, policy, outlines plans to formulate policies in nine crucial areas, including blockchain, artificial intelligence (AI), telecommunications, and data management. Notably, a national AI strategy takes precedence within this pillar, with a specific aim to elevate Nigeria from its current rank of 96th in AI readiness to 50th by 2030.
Furthermore, the strategy seeks to establish Nigeria as a top 10 destination for AI model training and talent globally. Additionally, it aspires to position Nigeria as a global leader in promoting inclusivity within AI datasets.
The remaining pillars—infrastructure, innovation, entrepreneurship & capital, and trade—align closely with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda. It’s important to note that the document outlining these goals and objectives serves as a highlight rather than an operational plan, providing a clear vision for Nigeria’s digital future.
