The Bank of Ghana (BoG) has been honored with the prestigious Financial Inclusion Institutional Leadership Award for the year 2023 by the Alliance for Financial Inclusion (AFI).
This distinguished accolade was presented to the Bank during the AFI 2023 Global Policy Forum (GPF), which took place in Manila, Philippines, from September 12th to 15th, 2023. The event was hosted by the central bank of the Philippines, Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas.
The award serves as a recognition of the Bank of Ghana’s pioneering efforts in advancing financial inclusion and its significant intellectual contributions to AFI’s Knowledge Products and Policy Guidelines.
The Bank of Ghana has played a vital role within AFI, actively participating in all seven Working Groups (WGs) of the organization, including the chairing of three of them. These contributions encompass peer reviews of policy and regulatory frameworks within AFI member jurisdictions, helping to shape policies and regulations across various aspects of financial inclusion.
Additionally, the Bank has been a generous host for numerous AFI peer learning exchange programs, where it has provided valuable training to members of the AFI network.
Mrs. Elsie Addo Awadzi, the Second Deputy Governor of the Bank of Ghana and Chair of AFI’s Gender Inclusive Finance Committee, received the award on behalf of the Bank during the ceremony held in Manila, Philippines, on September 15th, 2023.
The Alliance for Financial Inclusion, composed of eighty-five (85) member institutions hailing from over eighty (80) emerging and developing countries, is a policy leadership alliance led and owned by central banks and financial regulatory institutions. Its primary objective is to drive financial inclusion on national, regional, and global levels.
The AFI Global Policy Forum (GPF) is an annual flagship event that serves as a platform for sharing experiences related to financial inclusion initiatives in member countries. The forum also evaluates the impact of financial inclusion policies, socio-economic developments, and global financial standards on the advancement of financial inclusion. During the GPF, member institutions make new policy commitments to address observed challenges.
The theme of the 2023 GPF was ‘Stability, Sustainability, and Inclusivity for Shared Prosperity,’ underscoring the significance of financial inclusion and sustainable development in achieving monetary and financial stability. The event drew participation from more than 700 attendees representing member institutions, global financial sector standard-setting bodies, and policymakers.
