The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has revealed that Nigerians and telecom consumers within the country exchanged a staggering 25.93 billion text messages locally in the year 2022.
This information was disclosed in the NCC’s recently published ‘2022 Subscriber/Network Data Annual Report.’
The report highlighted a substantial 28.82% increase in the total volume of text messages sent and received compared to the previous year.
Out of this total, approximately 14.09 billion SMS messages were sent, while around 11.84 billion were received.
Interestingly, the report pinpointed MTN as the telecom provider with the highest number of exchanged text messages.
The report excerpted, “The total number of national SMS both sent and received as of December 2022 was 25,928,704,567. This reflects an increase of 28.82% from the total SMS sent and received in the year 2021, which stood at 20,126,551,822 SMS.”
“SMS sent in the year 2022 saw a remarkable increase of 48.84% compared to the year 2021. Additionally, the count of received SMS in 2022 rose by 11.06%, surpassing the count of 2021.”
“In 2022, MTN recorded the highest count of both received and sent SMS, standing at 8,738,690,150 and 8,323,722,485 respectively.”
The report also provided insights into international SMS, revealing that approximately 59,571,547 were sent by December 2022, while the total count of received international SMS reached 459,329,782.
As previously reported by Saturday Punch, Nigerians and other telecom consumers within the country spent a significant N3.33 trillion on various telecom services in 2022, including calls, data, SMS, and other offerings.
