Zimbabwe, has announced plans to launch a nanosatellite to be called ZimSat-1 in July 2022. This will be the country’s first satellite launch into orbit.

ZimSat-1 is an earth observation CubeSat, which falls under the small satellites category deployed by new space-faring countries.

The satellite will be launched from the Japanese KIBO Module – the Asian country’s science module for the International Space Station (ISS), reports the Sunday Mail.

The upcoming satellite launch, marks the first steps of the country’s space programme, which was launched in 2018 following the launch of the Zimbabwe National Geospatial and Space Agency (ZINGSA).

With ZimSat-1 in orbit, Zimbabwe will become the 14th African country to enter space.

Speaking on the launch, ZINGSA coordinator Mr Painos Gweme said, “Everything is now ready; we received a report recently indicating that it was tested and approved for flight. We have our engineers on the ground in Japan who are making sure everything goes according to plan.”

The announcement by Zimbabwe to launch a satellite, follows hot on the heels of Uganda announcing the upcoming launch of its first-ever satellite into low Earth orbit in September 2022.
