SpaceX has officially launched its Starlink satellite internet service in Zambia, marking it as the sixth African country to receive this high-speed connectivity. This expansion of Starlink in Zambia aligns with SpaceX’s strategy to extend its satellite internet service across the African continent. Zambia’s President, Hakainde Hichilema, celebrated this development with a tweet:

“Starlink is now live in Zambia, access to technology and information is no longer a luxury for our people. A great step as we work towards affordable digital access for all.”

The introduction of Starlink in Zambia holds significant promise for the nation’s internet infrastructure. According to the World Bank, only 44% of Zambians currently have access to the internet, and those who do often contend with high costs and slow connection speeds. Starlink’s presence could potentially stimulate economic growth in Zambia by attracting new businesses, investments, and job opportunities within the telecommunications sector.

Zambian residents can now order Starlink kits directly from the company’s website. According to Starlink’s pricing details, the hardware costs 10,744 Zambian kwacha ($505), with a monthly subscription fee of 507 Zambian kwacha ($24). Starlink has already expanded its services in 2023 to countries such as Nigeria, Kenya, Mozambique, Rwanda, and Malawi. Furthermore, it is on track to launch in Angola and Eswatini by the end of the year.
