Several major UK banks, including TSB, Bank of Scotland, Nationwide Building Society, Halifax, Lloyds, and First Direct, experienced technical difficulties this morning, leaving customers struggling to process payments on payday.
Customer Complaints Surge Amid Banking Outages
Customers took to social media and outage-tracking website Downdetector to report widespread service disruptions. According to Downdetector, over 4,400 Lloyds customers and 3,600 Halifax users faced login and transaction issues shortly after 8 AM GMT.
Nationwide confirmed delays in processing both incoming and outgoing payments, advising customers that while transactions are in queue, direct debits, online card payments, and internal transfers remain operational.
A spokesperson for Nationwide stated:
“We’ve identified an issue that was causing a delay to some incoming and outgoing payments. We’re now processing the queued payments, although we ask customers to bear with us as we complete their transactions. There is no need for people to resend payments. We apologise for any inconvenience caused.”
Additionally, First Direct acknowledged service disruptions, confirming that online payments were temporarily unavailable.
Banking Institutions Respond to Outages
Lloyds, Halifax, Bank of Scotland, and TSB issued statements via X (formerly Twitter), apologizing for the service disruptions and assuring customers that their teams were working to restore full functionality.
- Lloyds Bank (@LloydsBank):
“We know some of our customers are having issues logging on to online banking and our app. We’re sorry for this and we’re working to have everything back to normal.”
- Halifax Bank (@HalifaxBank):
“We know some of our customers are having issues logging on to online banking and our app. We’re sorry for this and we’re working to have everything back to normal.”
- TSB (@TSB):
“We are aware that some of our customers are having issues logging on to our mobile app and internet banking. We apologise for this and are working hard to resolve it – and will share an update as soon as possible.”
Recurring Payment Disruptions Raise Concerns
This marks the second consecutive month that major UK banks have encountered payday-related service outages. A similar disruption in January affected customers at Barclays, Lloyds, Capital One, and Halifax, raising concerns about the reliability of banking systems during high-transaction periods.
Resolution and Service Restoration
As of 12:00 PM GMT, a spokesperson from Lloyds Banking Group confirmed that the technical issues had been resolved and online banking services were fully restored.
Despite the resolution, the repeated disruptions have fueled concerns about banks’ digital infrastructure stability, prompting discussions on the need for enhanced compliance measures and resilience planning to prevent future occurrences.
