Mastercard has inaugurated its inaugural office in Uganda, a landmark step in its strategic expansion across East Africa. This new hub in Kampala highlights the company’s commitment to enhancing digital transformation and promoting financial inclusion within the region.
With Uganda’s economy expected to grow by 6.2% by 2025, establishing a local presence is set to boost collaboration with regional stakeholders. Mastercard aims to work closely with local partners to design tailored payment solutions that address the distinct needs of Ugandan consumers and businesses, ultimately contributing to the nation’s economic progress.
This expansion dovetails with Uganda’s ‘Digital Uganda Vision,’ a government initiative dedicated to harnessing digital technologies for national development. In line with this vision, Mastercard has signed a memorandum of understanding with the Ministry of ICT & National Guidance to fast-track the adoption of digital solutions that improve government services and widen financial access.
Further strengthening its position in the Ugandan market, Mastercard recently received a Payment System Operator (PSO) License from the Bank of Uganda under the National Payment Systems Act 2020. This license authorizes the company to manage essential financial operations—including settlement and clearing processes—within Uganda, positioning Mastercard as a key player in the country’s domestic payment ecosystem.

The Kampala office now joins Mastercard’s growing network in Africa, complementing its established hubs in Cairo, Casablanca, Johannesburg, Lagos, Nairobi, Port Louis, and Accra.
