The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has clarified issues regarding the status of Airtel Nigeria’s operating licence renewal.
The Commission in a statement signed by Dr. Ikechukwu Adinde, director, Public Affairs, said that Airtel Nigeria’s application for the renewal of its Unified Access Service (UASL) Licence is still undergoing regulatory process.
Adinde said that the explanation was necessitated by a recent statement on an online publication credited to the Mr. Olusegun Ogunsanya, the managing director/chief executive office of Airtel Nigeria, to the effect that the mobile operating licence of Airtel has been renewed by the Commission for another period of 10 years.
Mr. Ogunsanya was said to have made the statement while speaking in Lagos on Wednesday, July 14, 2021, during the media launch of Airtel’s corporate social responsibility programme, ‘Touching Lives Season 6’.
Meanwhile, Airtel Africa, a telecommunications provider in 14 countries, had said that NCC approved the renewal of spectrum licenses in 900 and 1800 Megahertz (MHZ) for its subsidiary Airtel Nigeria.
Raghunath Mandava, the outgoing chief executive officer of Airtel Africa, disclosed in January 2021, adding that the spectrum licenses were due to expire on Nov. 30.
NCC affirmed this by stating that while Airtel Nigeria has applied for the renewal of the Unified Access Service (UASL) Licence granted to it by the Commission, “the application is yet to be approved as it is still undergoing required regulatory process”.
“This statement is issued for the guidance of our stakeholders”, Adinde said.
