The Federal Government of Nigeria is preparing to open applications for its ambitious three million digital skill empowerment program, scheduled to kick off on Friday.

Dr. Bosun Tijani, the Minister of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy, made this announcement during a fireside conversation at Moonshot by TechCabal.

He elaborated that the application process would welcome both trainers and individuals aspiring to acquire technical skills, emphasizing the inclusive nature of the initiative.

The first phase of the program aims to target 30,000 Nigerians. Tijani stated, “Starting from this Friday, you will see applications being released for both trainers and those who want to be fellows.”

Dr. Tijani recently outlined an ambitious plan to equip three million Nigerians with technology skills over the next four years. He expressed the government’s firm commitment to talent development, saying, “Our commitment to talent development is unwavering. We have set an ambitious goal to train three million early to mid-career technical talents over the next four years.”

Highlighting the success of organizations like Andela in Nigeria, the minister expressed his confidence in achieving the program’s goals. He explained that the ministry would adopt a gradual approach, starting small and expanding over time.

He shared, “So everything we’re going to do, we won’t start by saying we want to train 3 million people. The approach we are going to take is we are going to start with one per cent of that, in the first zero to three months.”

Continuing, he noted, “The model will be that we are starting with one per cent of our 3 million targets, and that is going to run for the first three months. That one per cent is going to be 30,000 people. It sounds like a lot. But one thing we’ve also done is if you take the 36 states of the country and you break down that 30,000.”

The program signifies a significant step toward empowering Nigerians with digital skills and driving the country’s technological advancement.
