President Bola Tinubu has conveyed the Federal Government of Nigeria’s willingness to collaborate with global tech giant Google Incorporated to generate one million digital jobs in the country.

In a statement signed by the President’s Special Adviser on Special Duties, Communications & Strategy, Dele Alake, it was revealed that President Tinubu expressed his assurance during a meeting at the State House on Friday (July 28, 2023), where he received Google Global Vice President, Richard Gingras.

President Tinubu emphasized that Nigeria boasts a pool of creative and talented young individuals who are eager to learn, especially in this era of digital revolution. He acknowledged that Google possesses the necessary capabilities and tools to empower these young people and enable them to excel.

“I am glad that Google is ready to partner with us. You have responded to our call for digital innovation and assistance to our youths. Your commitment to creating one million digital jobs in Nigeria aligns with our efforts to promote the digital economy. We are fully prepared to collaborate with you and offer all the support you require for a beneficial corporate responsibility. Although our economic reforms have been challenging, we have already embarked on the journey,” President Tinubu stated.

Regarding Google’s commitment to promoting free speech, freedom of the press, and democracy through its platforms, President Tinubu emphasized the importance of safeguarding these fundamental principles.

“It is in the public interest to continue defending free press and free speech. We are dedicated to supporting a free society,” he affirmed.

Richard Gingras, in response, expressed his admiration for the creativity and talent exhibited by young Nigerians who are embracing technology and digital tools to expand access to information and promote democracy.

He assured the President that Google holds a deep interest in Nigeria and is prepared to support the Federal Government in its endeavors.

Gingras highlighted various capabilities of Google, particularly in the areas of Artificial Intelligence and other digital innovations that empower young individuals to become digital entrepreneurs.

The collaboration between the Nigerian government and Google promises to open new avenues for digital job creation, fostering innovation, and advancing the country’s digital economy.
