Nigeria: WEMA Bank and Mastercard Partner to Empower 10,000 Women Entrepreneurs

WEMA Bank has announced its collaboration with the Entrepreneurial Development Centre of Pan-Atlantic University and Mastercard to provide support and training to empower 10,000 young women in various businesses and vocations.

Tunde Mabawonku, the Executive Director for Retail and Digital Business at Wema Bank, highlighted that this initiative is not only aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals but also aimed at generating authentic job prospects for the dynamic youth population in Nigeria, which will lead to positive transformations for individuals, enterprises, and families across the nation.

Ayodele Olojede, the Divisional Head of Retail and Small and Medium Enterprise at Wema Bank, emphasized that this collaboration will empower female customers by enhancing their skills, increasing their potential, improving employability, and equipping them to become successful entrepreneurs.

The collaboration aims to provide complimentary training to 10,000 female business owners who are valued customers of Wema Bank. Among these participants, 50 individuals will have the opportunity to become certified Business Development Support Providers through the Small and Medium Enterprises Development Agency of Nigeria (SMEDAN). Additionally, selected entrepreneurs will receive grants and seed funding of up to N500,000 each to help translate their learning into tangible business success.

Nneka Okekerau, the Director at EDC, highlighted that the training will span across entrepreneurs in creative, digital, and agribusiness sectors, and emphasized the importance of a change in mindset for achieving positive outcomes.

This initiative seeks to create an environment of empowerment, skill enhancement, and entrepreneurship, fostering economic growth and inclusivity in Nigeria.
