United Bank for Africa Plc (UBA) has announced the appointment of Henrietta Ngozi Ugboh as an independent non-executive director, effective 31 October 2024. This development was disclosed in a statement signed by UBA’s Company Secretary, Bili Odum, and filed with the Nigerian Exchange Limited (NGX) on Tuesday. The appointment received the approval of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) on 8 November 2024.
Over Three Decades of Banking Expertise
Mrs Ugboh brings more than 30 years of experience in the banking industry, with a strong academic background that includes a degree in Economics and Statistics from the University of Benin and an MBA from ESUT Business School. She is also an alumnus of Harvard Business School, underscoring her commitment to professional excellence.
Her career spans key areas such as commercial banking, credit management, and risk management, which align with UBA’s strategic goals of strengthening its market leadership.
Mrs Ugboh’s professional affiliations further highlight her industry stature. She is an Honorary Senior Member of the Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria and a Fellow of the Institute of Credit Administration, reflecting her extensive recognition and contributions to the sector.

Commenting on the appointment, Tony Elumelu, Chairman of UBA Group, expressed confidence in Mrs Ugboh’s ability to enhance the bank’s governance and strategic direction.

UBA also announced the retirement of Owanari Duke, who has served as an independent non-executive director since 2012. Throughout her tenure, Mrs Duke demonstrated exceptional leadership, chairing multiple board committees, including those on governance, audit, and remuneration.
The board acknowledged her contributions to UBA’s governance, extending gratitude for her “distinguished leadership”and wishing her well in her future endeavors.
