Tinubu Names Idris Olorunnimbe as NCC Chairman, Constitutes USPF Board

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has appointed Idris Olorunnimbe as Chairman of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), the country’s telecommunications regulator.

The appointment coincides with the constitution of the boards for both the NCC and the Universal Service Provision Fund (USPF), which operate under the Ministry of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy.

Olorunnimbe, known for his work in public service and entrepreneurship development, previously served on the board of the Lagos State Employment Trust Fund (LSETF), where he chaired the Stakeholder and Governance Committee. During his tenure, he spearheaded youth employment programmes and entrepreneurship initiatives that supported thousands of small businesses in Lagos.

At the NCC, Olorunnimbe will oversee policy direction for a sector that contributes over 13% to Nigeria’s GDP and plays a pivotal role in the nation’s digital transformation. He will work alongside Dr Aminu Maida, appointed Executive Vice Chairman and CEO of the NCC in October 2023.

Other members of the newly formed NCC board include Abraham Oshidami (Executive Commissioner, Technical Services), Rimini Makama (Executive Commissioner, Stakeholder Management), Hajia Maryam Bayi (former Director of Human Capital & Administration), Col. Abdulwahab Lawal (Rtd), Senator Lekan Mustafa, Chris Okorie, Princess Oforitsenere Emiko, and the board secretary.

Olorunnimbe will also serve as Vice Chairman of the USPF Board, chaired by the Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Dr Bosun Tijani. The USPF was established to expand universal access to ICT services in rural, underserved, and unserved areas across Nigeria.

The appointments come as the NCC is tasked with driving broadband penetration, enhancing telecom infrastructure, and improving service quality amid the rapid expansion of Nigeria’s digital economy.
