The National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) has announced its intention to establish a cybersecurity laboratory in Nigeria by 2024, as stated in a recent statement by Mrs Hadiza Umar, Head of Corporate Affairs and External Relations at NITDA.
During a meeting with Dr Iliyasu Gashinbak, President of the Chartered Institute of Forensic and Certified Fraud Investigator of Nigeria, and his team, the Director-General of NITDA, Kashifu Inuwa, highlighted the importance of collaboration in promoting digital forensics, revitalizing the tech ecosystem, and combating cybercrimes in the digital domain.
Inuwa expressed concern over the detrimental impact of cybercrimes on Nigeria’s economy, organizations, and individuals. He emphasized the necessity of building capacity to protect against unscrupulous actors in the cyber realm.
The director-general acknowledged that cybercriminals invest heavily in research, information technology, and powerful tools to carry out their attacks. Therefore, he stressed the non-negotiable importance of taking proactive measures to counter them.
Inuwa further stated, “While we have invested in other technologies such as the Digital Fabrication Lab (FABLAB 1.0) and other labs across the country, we are yet to establish a cybersecurity laboratory. We have already identified a potential location, but we need the involvement of all relevant stakeholders to expedite the design and implementation of the center.”
