The National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) has called on Nigerians to take greater personal responsibility for protecting themselves against the growing wave of cyber threats and online fraud, emphasizing that cybersecurity begins with individual action.
The reminder comes as part of the agency’s activities marking the 2025 National Cybersecurity Awareness Month, themed “Cyber Hygiene for a Safer Tomorrow.”
NITDA highlighted that as digital technologies—such as mobile banking, e-commerce, and online communication—continue to shape everyday life, awareness and discipline have become vital in preventing cyber incidents that target unsuspecting users.
According to the agency, the rapid expansion of Nigeria’s digital economy also attracts increasing risks. To stay safe, citizens must adopt good cyber hygiene practices, including:
-
Using strong, unique passwords;
-
Enabling two-factor authentication;
-
Regularly updating software and security systems;
-
Backing up important data;
-
Avoiding suspicious links, attachments, and websites; and
-
Exercising caution before sharing personal or financial information online.
“Cyber hygiene is not just a personal duty but a shared responsibility. When individuals protect themselves, they also safeguard their families, workplaces, and the broader digital community,” NITDA stated.
The agency warned that cybercriminals are increasingly targeting both individuals and organizations across Nigeria, making proactive cybersecurity habits indispensable for building a secure and resilient digital nation.
As part of its national awareness campaign, NITDA urged citizens to “stay alert, click wisely, and stay safe online,” reinforcing that collective vigilance is key to ensuring a safer digital future for all.
The statement was signed by Mrs. Hadiza Umar, Director of Corporate Communications and Media Relations at NITDA.
