The National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) and the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) are joining forces to enhance Nigeria’s digital framework, focusing on the integration of Public Key Infrastructure (PKI) and digital public infrastructure (DPI). This collaboration aims to unify digital identity, streamline the payment ecosystem, and facilitate efficient data exchange across the country, as reported by Channels Television.

This initiative aligns with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s vision under the “renewed hope agenda,” which seeks to provide equitable technological solutions for all Nigerian citizens.

Kashifu Inuwa Abdullahi, Director-General of NITDA, alongside Bisoye Coker-Odusote, Director-General of NIMC, convened with their management teams to strategize on enhancing Nigeria’s digital infrastructure. Their discussion focused on developing DPI stacks to enable seamless data exchange and strengthening partnerships to expand and improve the national identity system.

To accelerate these strategic initiatives, a 12-member committee has been formed. This committee is tasked with synergizing efforts and is expected to submit an implementation report within four weeks.

The partnership also addresses the need to widen digital ID coverage and optimize the registration process for the biometric National Identification Number (NIN) system, a priority underscored towards the close of 2023.

Recent communications from NIMC regarding the national ID cards caused some confusion, which the commission clarified, stating that the updates pertain to one national ID card, not three separate ones, as some had misunderstood.
