The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has announced the successful migration of all telecommunications operators in Nigeria to its upgraded National Identification Number (NIN) verification platform, NINAuth.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, NIMC said the transition marks a significant milestone in strengthening digital identity verification, enhancing data privacy, and improving service delivery across Nigeria’s identity ecosystem.
Lanre Yusuf, Director of IT and Identity Database Department at NIMC, confirmed that all telecom operators are now fully integrated with the NINAuth platform, allowing for uninterrupted access to identity verification services.
“This milestone reflects our unwavering commitment to safeguarding digital identity and empowering Nigerians with greater autonomy over their personal data,” Yusuf stated.
Developed internally by NIMC’s technical team, NINAuth is designed to offer secure, efficient, and user-friendly identity verification. It enhances privacy protocols, streamlines user authentication, and facilitates smoother access to SIM-related and other digital services.
Speaking further, NIMC’s Head of Corporate Communications, Dr. Kayode Adegoke, emphasized that the platform reinforces user control over personal information.
“The aim is to ensure that Nigerians maintain ownership and control of their identity data,” Adegoke said. He also advised citizens experiencing challenges with SIM registration, replacement, or retrieval to contact their telecom providers directly for resolution.
The announcement follows weeks of service disruption in the telecom sector linked to the migration process. Beginning around June 26, 2025, NIMC initiated the switch to NINAuth, a more secure system for verifying NINs in processes such as SIM registration, swaps, number porting, and welcome-back requests.
The transition initially caused technical glitches that disrupted SIM-related services across major operators including MTN, Airtel, Glo, and 9mobile—impacting not only mobile communication but also banking and digital services reliant on verified phone numbers.
During the outage, the Association of Licensed Telecommunications Operators of Nigeria (ALTON) advised subscribers to postpone SIM-related transactions, while working closely with the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) and NIMC to restore service continuity.
NIMC has now confirmed that the migration is complete and that the NINAuth platform is fully functional. The Commission reaffirmed its commitment to providing secure, privacy-centric identity services and assured Nigerians of its readiness to support the nation’s digital infrastructure with reliable verification tools.
