NDPC Reaffirms Strict Enforcement of Data Protection Act at NGDX Workshop

The National Commissioner of the Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC), Dr. Vincent Olatunji, has reiterated the Commission’s unwavering commitment to enforcing the Nigeria Data Protection Act (NDP Act), describing compliance as fundamental to Nigeria’s digital transformation agenda.

Speaking in Abuja at the Nigeria Data Exchange Platform (NGDX) Stakeholder Workshop, Dr. Olatunji underscored that data protection goes beyond regulatory necessity, calling it a strategic enabler of digital public infrastructure (DPI).

“For Nigeria to fully unlock the potential of data, we must prioritise the lawful and responsible use of personal data within exchange frameworks. Public trust can only thrive on transparency, accountability, and robust data protection practices,” he stated.

He emphasized NDPC’s dual role of strict enforcement and promotion of data ethics, awareness, and trust-building across the digital ecosystem. Stakeholders at the workshop aligned with this vision, noting that compliance with the NDP Act is critical to achieving secure, seamless, and efficient data exchange across institutions.

Since its establishment in 2023, NDPC has been commended for reforms that are reshaping Nigeria’s data governance landscape. Dr. Olatunji attributed this progress to collaborative efforts and visionary leadership driving inclusive digital governance.

The workshop drew participation from top government and industry leaders, including the Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Dr. Bosun Tijani; the Managing Director/CEO of Galaxy Backbone, Professor Ibrahim Adeyanju; the Director-General of NITDA, Mr. Kashifu Inuwa Abdullahi; and the Post-Master General of NIPOST, Engr. Tola Odeyemi.

Dr. Olatunji expressed optimism that sustained partnerships with stakeholders will strengthen Nigeria’s position as a trusted, secure, and innovation-driven digital economy.
