The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has provided assurance that internet services will soon be restored as operators work to repair the damaged undersea cables.
Earlier reports on Thursday indicated a series of cable cuts that caused equipment faults on major undersea cables along the West African Coast, affecting data and fixed telecom services in several countries including Nigeria, Ghana, Senegal, and Cote d’Ivoire.
The disruptions occurred in Cote d’Ivoire and Senegal, with consequent impacts in Portugal. Cable companies such as West African Cable System (WACS) and African Coast to Europe (ACE) experienced faults, while SAT3 and MainOne faced downtime.
Similar undersea cables providing traffic from Europe to the East Coast of Africa, like Seacom, Europe India Gateway (EIG), and Asia-Africa-Europe 1 (AAE1), were also affected, with disruptions around the Red Sea leading to degraded services across routes.
Underwater cables play a crucial role in transporting vast volumes of data across continents, forming a vital part of internet connectivity infrastructure. However, they are susceptible to damage from factors such as accidental cuts, natural disasters, or technological failures, which can severely impact governments, corporations, and individual consumers alike.
In Nigeria and other affected West African countries, internet access and speed suffered disruptions, particularly affecting the networks of service providers, including banks and telecom companies.
The NCC, in a press statement, confirmed that cable operators have initiated repair efforts, and services are gradually being restored. The Commission assured that operators are working tirelessly to expedite repairs and restore services to affected countries promptly.
Additionally, MTN stated its commitment to addressing the disruptions swiftly by rerouting traffic through alternative network paths and collaborating with consortium partners to expedite the repair process.
In a statement, MTN emphasized the critical importance of consistent internet and communication services and pledged to minimize service interruptions and maintain connectivity while resolving the situation.
Customers are urged to remain patient as efforts are underway to resolve the disruptions and restore seamless internet connectivity across affected regions.
