The Commissioner for Insurance, Mr. Sunday Thomas, has called on the Professional Insurance Ladies Association (PILA) to join forces with the National Insurance Commission (NAICOM) in promoting growth within the insurance sector.

Mr. Thomas made this statement during PILA’s 50th-anniversary celebration, which was attended by prominent figures in the financial sector and government officials in Lagos.

He expressed his desire for PILA’s leadership to establish an ongoing partnership and synergy with the commission to foster a vibrant and robust insurance industry. Mr. Thomas assured stakeholders in the industry that the commission is open to new ideas and committed to introducing contemporary reforms and initiatives aligned with international best practices.

Recognizing PILA as the oldest female professional body in Nigeria, he encouraged them to continue their efforts in encouraging women’s participation in the insurance sector. Mr. Thomas urged PILA to believe in a new era by nurturing transformative women leaders who can drive the industry towards a technologically connected future and bring about a positive paradigm shift to meet the anticipated increase in demand and untapped potential.

The President of PILA, Margaret Moore, highlighted the significance of the event as a milestone in the association’s journey to empower and uplift women in the Nigerian insurance industry. She emphasized that PILA provides a platform for women to thrive, excel, and shape the future of the industry.

To commemorate PILA’s 50th anniversary and in line with NAICOM’s objective of developing actuarial capacity, Moore’s team has produced a well-researched insurance textbook. The textbook aims to be a valuable resource for practitioners, the insuring public, and students during PILA’s annual career talk shows.

Reflecting on some of PILA’s achievements, Moore mentioned the inception of PILA Africa during the association’s first international exchange program in The Gambia in May 2013, which took place during the tenure of former President Olufemi Ogun and with the support of former President Jocelyn Ogbuokiri as the education secretary.

On the occasion of PILA’s 50th anniversary, Moore expressed the association’s desire to welcome other accomplished women professionals in the Nigerian insurance industry to join their ranks.

The collaboration between NAICOM and PILA holds the promise of driving industry growth and empowering women to play a vital role in shaping the future of insurance in Nigeria.
