MTN Nigeria, a telecommunications leader, is at the forefront of advancing Nigeria’s digital economy, contributing a remarkable 7% to the nation’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP), according to its CEO, Karl Toriola.

Speaking at the TeXcellence 2024 conference, Toriola underscored the pivotal role of telecommunications in Nigeria’s economic growth, noting that the sector contributes 14% to the overall GDP. He emphasized MTN’s evolution into a technology-driven company (Techco) as a catalyst for further economic development.

Highlighting MTN’s transformative projects, Toriola revealed plans for the construction of West Africa’s largest data center and the rapid expansion of 5G services. These initiatives aim to enhance connectivity, improve digital services, and strengthen Nigeria’s digital infrastructure.

However, Toriola acknowledged significant barriers to digital access. He noted that 71% of Nigerians face challenges in maintaining consistent internet connectivity due to affordability issues.

To bridge this gap, Toriola called for a collaborative approach involving industry players, international stakeholders, and government agencies. He stressed the need for strategic investments in digital infrastructure and a commitment to fostering innovation and curiosity among Nigerians.

By leveraging its current contributions and ambitious projects, MTN Nigeria aims to play a crucial role in realizing the country’s vision of becoming a trillion-dollar economy, driving sustainable growth and digital transformation.
