Nigerian fintech firm Moniepoint has joined forces with the Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC) to promote responsible handling of personal data among young Nigerians.
According to Moniepoint, this partnership is part of the initiatives marking the National Privacy Week 2024. The company emphasized that with approximately 65 percent of Nigeria’s population under the age of 30, it is essential to raise awareness about data protection rights and responsibilities.
Moniepoint stated that its focus on Nigeria’s youth population stems from their potential to enhance the country’s productivity and their role in fostering an ethical and healthy digital ecosystem, aligning with Nigeria’s aspirations for a digital economy.
Babatunde Olofin, the Managing Director of Moniepoint Microfinance Bank, described young people as key assets for Nigeria’s socio-economic development, citing their potential for innovation, entrepreneurship, and job creation.
Olofin stressed the importance of increasing young people’s awareness of data protection and privacy issues, underscoring their significance in navigating a digitalized and interconnected world.
He remarked, “We aim to empower young individuals to take control of their digital presence, starting with understanding their rights and the value of personal data. As a compliant and responsible data processor, we believe that financial well-being can thrive only in an environment where data subjects act responsibly as digital citizens. We are committed to supporting industry stakeholders in fostering an ecosystem that prioritizes data protection and privacy for all Nigerians.”
Vincent Olatunji, the National Commissioner of the Nigeria Data Protection Commission, also commented on the collaboration, tracing the evolution of data protection in Nigeria. He highlighted the importance of Nigerian youths in driving the country’s digital economy forward and stressed the necessity for them to grasp the significance of data privacy and responsibly handle personal data as they engage with technology.
