The Lagos State Government, through the Office of Special Adviser on Climate Change and Circular Economy (OCCE), has signed an Expression of Interest (EoI) with the EU-Africa Chamber of Commerce (EUACC) to bolster climate financing, facilitate technology transfer, and drive green economic growth. This strategic partnership aligns with Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s vision to position Lagos as a sustainable and resilient megacity.

Advancing Climate Action and Sustainability

The agreement, formalized at COP29 in Baku, Azerbaijan, underscores Lagos State’s commitment to addressing climate challenges and achieving the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) goals under Articles 6.2 and 6.4ER. The partnership focuses on fostering carbon offset projects, strengthening Economic, Environmental, Social, and Governance (EESG) compliance, and advancing circular economy principles.

The collaboration will prioritize bankable and de-risked sustainable projects, reinforcing Lagos’ role as a global leader in climate action while attracting green investments.

Building on Strategic Partnerships

Speaking at the signing ceremony, Mrs. Titilayo Oshodi, Special Adviser on Climate Change and Circular Economy, emphasized the significance of this partnership:

“The Lagos State OCCE, through the Ministry of Economic Planning and Budget, plans to formalize this collaboration with an MoU during COP29. This partnership will focus on green financing, technology transfer, and sustainable development, ensuring environmental sustainability is central to Lagos State’s financial planning across all ministries.”

Mrs. Oshodi highlighted the OCCE’s strategic role in integrating environmental priorities into Lagos’ financial decision-making, advancing the economic case for sustainability.

Driving Innovation and Investment

The partnership with the EUACC leverages its extensive network and expertise to accelerate the deployment of innovative climate solutions in Lagos. This includes promoting green investments and positioning the state as a hub for cutting-edge sustainable initiatives.

“Our collaboration with the EU-Africa Chamber of Commerce is pivotal to advancing our vision for a sustainable future in Lagos. Participation in COP29 has strengthened our position as a leader in global climate action, enabling us to forge strategic partnerships and showcase Lagos’ pioneering climate projects,” Oshodi added.

A Sustainable Path Forward

By aligning with global climate priorities and leveraging strategic partnerships, Lagos State is taking decisive steps toward creating a sustainable and inclusive future. This initiative further cements its commitment to tackling climate change while ensuring economic growth, environmental resilience, and technological advancement for its residents.
