At a recent event, key figures including EFCC Executive Chairman Ola Olukoyede, Flutterwave Founder and CEO Olugbenga ‘GB’ Agboola, Chief Compliance Officer Mobolaji Bammeke, and FBI Director Christopher Gray gathered to announce a significant partnership between Flutterwave and the EFCC aimed at combating cybercrime.
Olugbenga Agboola emphasized Flutterwave’s dedication to secure financial transactions and the creation of a fraud-free financial ecosystem. “We commend the EFCC’s tireless efforts to combat internet fraud and other illicit activities within the financial sector,” Agboola stated, highlighting the importance of the collaboration.
EFCC Chairman Ola Olukoyede expressed his appreciation for the partnership, noting its vital role in enhancing the Commission’s efforts to combat financial crimes. He stated that the establishment of the Cybercrime Research Centre would substantially improve the EFCC’s ability to prevent, detect, and prosecute financial crimes.
The initiative aims to develop and implement advanced technologies for detecting and preventing financial fraud. Additionally, the centre will offer extensive training for law enforcement and industry professionals to equip them with the skills needed to combat financial crimes effectively.
The Cybercrime Research Centre is set to provide high-end training and research opportunities for 500 youths, preparing them with the necessary skills for the digital economy. It will also foster collaboration and knowledge sharing between the public and private sectors to address financial crimes, including those related to cryptocurrencies, by providing access to advanced tools, technologies, and resources.
In March 2024, the EFCC and the Nigeria Financial Intelligence Unit (NFIU) announced new strategies to help Nigeria exit the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) grey list, aiming to prevent the country from being moved to the black list.
