The Executive Chairman of the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS), Dr. Zacch Adedeji, has highlighted the agency’s commitment to a more taxpayer-friendly approach, driven by recent transformations aimed at simplifying tax compliance. Speaking at the FIRS Special Day during the 2024 Lagos International Trade Fair (LITF) held at Tafawa Balewa Square, Lagos, Adedeji, represented by Mr. Isola Akingbade, State Administrator for FIRS in Lagos Island, emphasized FIRS’s dedication to supporting Nigeria’s business community.

Underscoring the significance of FIRS’s collaboration with the Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI) in organizing the annual Fair, Adedeji stated, “Our partnership with the business community is essential to fostering growth. We are committed to making tax payments and filing processes straightforward and accessible to promote compliance among taxpayers.”

Adedeji noted that FIRS is now paying closer attention to both “internal” taxpayers—referring to FIRS staff who also contribute as taxpayers—and “external” taxpayers, which includes corporate entities and Nigerian business owners. He added, “We do not wish for any business to struggle or close; a thriving economy benefits everyone, and we cannot collect taxes from a defunct company. Our goal is to establish a seamless, fair tax payment system that minimizes penalties, supports compliance, and promotes the prosperity of businesses.”

At the event, Dr. Loveth Onanuga, FIRS Director of Taxpayer Services, discussed the rationale behind FIRS’s active participation in the Trade Fair. She highlighted that the agency values the business community as a vital contributor to national growth, further reinforcing FIRS’s commitment to fostering an environment that prioritizes taxpayer engagement and support.
