The Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) has integrated Flutterwave’s payment technology to modernize tax collection, marking a significant step toward digitizing Nigeria’s tax system. This partnership positions Flutterwave among the select fintech firms supporting the government’s drive for seamless, efficient, and transparent tax payments.

Enhancing Tax Collection Through Digital Innovation

In a statement released on Thursday, Flutterwave confirmed that the integration will enable FIRS to leverage its secure payment infrastructure for collecting taxes, levies, and other government dues from businesses and individuals nationwide.

With this development, taxpayers can now make payments using multiple digital channels, ensuring real-time tracking, offline payment options, and a seamless tax payment experience for Nigerians both locally and in the diaspora.

The initiative aligns with FIRS’ broader strategy to enhance tax compliance and optimize revenue collection through digital solutions, underscoring the growing role of fintech in Nigeria’s public sector.

Driving Efficiency and Transparency in Government Collections

Flutterwave’s Chief Executive Officer, Olugbenga Agboola, emphasized the company’s commitment to leveraging technology for economic growth and efficiency.

“At Flutterwave, we are committed to using technology to simplify financial processes. By making tax payments more accessible and transparent, we are helping to digitize government collections and support national development, which aligns with our mission,” Agboola stated.

Key benefits of this integration include:

  • Real-time payment tracking,
  • Multiple digital and mobile payment options,
  • Offline tax payment capabilities, and
  • Enhanced transparency for both taxpayers and the FIRS.

Additionally, the system provides Nigerians abroad with a convenient means to fulfill their tax obligations without geographical barriers.

Strengthening Public Sector Collaboration

Olufunmilayo Olaniyi, Flutterwave’s Senior Vice President of Business Development, highlighted the significance of working with government agencies to drive innovation in digital payments.

“Collaborating with the public sector is essential for shaping the future of digital payments in Nigeria. This partnership reinforces our commitment to delivering solutions that serve Nigerians better, foster trust, and drive meaningful innovation,” he said.

Expanding E-Governance and Digital Tax Reforms

FIRS has been implementing various e-governance initiatives to enhance efficiency and transparency in tax administration. These include:

  • Online tax filing and payment,
  • Electronic tax registration,
  • Data-driven risk assessment, and
  • Taxpayer self-service portals.

As part of its modernization agenda, FIRS plans to launch an e-invoicing system by July 2025. This initiative will provide real-time visibility into business transactions, streamline invoice management, and further enhance tax compliance across Nigeria.

By integrating fintech-driven solutions like Flutterwave’s payment infrastructure, FIRS is reinforcing its commitment to leveraging technology for a more efficient, transparent, and accessible tax system.
